I was in a “violin” type mood and I thought of this great composition (and music video) by Giovanni Sollima:

‘Vocalise’ is indeed a beautiful piece, though I feel I have to be in the right mood to listen to it (and the mood fitting to this piece is a rare one).
Though, when you say your ‘favourite composition for violin’, did you know that Rachmaninoff originally published it as a composition for voice and piano accompaniment? Its many other guises owe themselves to the fact that the ‘voice’ part is just one chosen vowel sound; my own recording is that of Renee Flemming, which you can see on YouTube here:
I actually did know that it was originally composed for voice and piano accompaniment. The first time I listened to the composition I heard it on a violin, and I have preferred that ever since. There was one recording I heard of a French horn—that was breathtaking as well.
